The Odyssey

Homer's The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem, composed orally and later written down, that follows the hero Odysseus on his ten-year journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The narrative is built around two parallel frameworks: Odysseus's episodic wanderings across the Mediterranean, and the troubled situation in his own household, where his wife Penelope fends off suitors and his son Telemachus searches for news of his father. The poem opens in medias res, with Odysseus stranded on the island of Calypso while the gods debate his fate. Its distinctive structure is a series of encounters with mythological figures and places: the cyclops Polyphemus, the sorceress Circe, the underworld consultation with the prophet Tiresias, the Sirens, the monsters Scylla and Charybdis, and the cattle of the sun god Helios. These adventures test Odysseus's cunning, endurance, and loyalty, earning him the epithet "man of many turns." Meanwhile, the subplot of Telemachus's coming-of-age journey, often called the Telemachy, examines inheritance and hospitality, a recurring theme known as xenia. The second half shifts to Ithaca, where Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, assesses the suitors' corruption before a final confrontation. Penelope's weaving trick and the contest of the bow anchor the tension. The poem explores themes of nostos (homecoming), fate versus free will, and the cost of survival. Comprising 24 books in dactylic hexameter, it remains a foundational work of Western literature, distinct from the Iliad's focus on war and glory.
