John Grisham’s 1992 legal thriller The Pelican Brief opens with the assassination of two U.S. Supreme Court justices, a conservative and a liberal, on the same night in Washington, D.C. The killings appear to be the work of a lone gunman. Tulane law student Darby Shaw, intrigued by the ideological pairing of the victims, writes a speculative legal memorandum examining who might benefit from their deaths. Her brief links the murders to a Louisiana oil magnate who has a secret stake in a pending environmental case involving the endangered pelican habitat on Louisiana’s coast, and who stands to lose billions if the case reaches the Court. Darby shares her theory with her professor and lover, Thomas Callahan, who passes it to a friend at the FBI. When Callahan is killed by a car bomb and others connected to the brief begin dying, Darby realizes her theory has exposed a real conspiracy and goes into hiding. She turns to Washington Post investigative reporter Gray Grantham, and together they attempt to verify the connection between the killings and the oil tycoon while evading a ruthless assassin known only as Khamel. The novel unfolds as a cat-and-mouse pursuit across Washington, New Orleans, and New York, alternating between Darby’s flight, the killer’s pursuit, and Grantham’s newsroom investigation. It centers on the power of a single document—the pelican brief itself—as both an intellectual puzzle and a death warrant, and it showcases Grisham’s signature blend of legal procedure, investigative journalism, and political corruption.
