The Pelican Brief

John Grisham’s 1992 legal thriller The Pelican Brief opens with the assassination of two U.S. Supreme Court justices, a conservative and a liberal, on the same night in Washington, D.C. She turns to Washington Post investigative reporter Gray Grantham, and together they attempt to verify the connection between the killings and the oil tycoon while evading a ruthless assassin known only as Khamel. The novel unfolds as a cat-and-mouse pursuit across Washington, New Orleans, and New York, alternating between Darby’s flight, the killer’s pursuit, and Grantham’s newsroom investigation. It centers on the power of a single document—the pelican brief itself—as both an intellectual puzzle and a death warrant, and it showcases Grisham’s signature blend of legal procedure, investigative journalism, and political corruption.
