The Righteous Mind

In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt argues that moral judgments are driven first by rapid intuition and only afterward by reasoning, a claim captured in his metaphor that the intuitive mind is an elephant and rational thought is a rider who mostly serves the elephant. The book is organized around three central principles: intuitions come first and strategic reasoning second; morality binds people into groups while blinding them to other groups' truths; and moral psychology is shaped by evolutionary pressures that made humans both selfish and groupish. Haidt introduces Moral Foundations Theory, proposing that people across cultures rely on different combinations of foundations such as care, fairness, loyalty, authority, and sanctity, which helps explain why liberals and conservatives often talk past each other. He draws on research including the moral dumbfounding studies, in which participants condemn harmless taboo violations but cannot articulate why, and the "taste buds of the righteous mind" analogy for moral intuitions. Later sections explore group selection and the idea that humans are "90 percent chimp and 10 percent bee," capable of transcending self-interest when they feel part of a shared sacred mission. Haidt examines how religion and political ideologies function as team sports that bind communities, and he closes by urging readers to understand opponents' moral matrices rather than assume they are simply wrong or evil. The book combines evolutionary psychology, anthropology, and political analysis to explain the origins of moral disagreement.
