The Rosie Result

The Rosie Result is the third novel in Graeme Simsion’s Rosie trilogy, following The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect. It centres on Don Tillman, a Melbourne geneticist with autism-spectrum traits, and his wife Rosie, as they return from New York to Australia and confront a new challenge: their eleven-year-old son, Hudson, is struggling socially at school and may be on the spectrum himself. The novel’s distinctive framework is the “Hudson Project,” Don’s characteristically systematic attempt to help his son fit in, echoing the wife-finding “Wife Project” of the first book. Don weighs whether to pursue a formal diagnosis for Hudson, while simultaneously running a controversial genetics lecture and navigating professional conflict at the university. Running counter to Don’s interventionist instincts is Rosie’s view that Hudson may simply need acceptance rather than correction, and the couple’s disagreement over diagnosis and identity forms the book’s emotional core. The setting moves between Melbourne, including Hudson’s school and Don’s university department, and a return visit to New York. Recurring characters from earlier books reappear, among them Don’s friend Gene and the eccentric musician Dave, while new figures include Hudson’s teachers and peers. The story also introduces a cocktail bar staffed partly by people on the autism spectrum, a setting Simsion uses to dramatise questions of employment, community, and neurodiversity. Published in 2019, the novel continues Simsion’s comic-serious examination of autism, parenting, and belonging, and touches on debates over diagnosis, labelling, and whether “fitting in” is the right goal at all. Its plot turns on Don applying his scientific habits of mind to fatherhood while questioning what he and Rosie actually want for Hudson.
