The Screwtape Letters

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis is an epistolary novel consisting of thirty-one letters written by a senior demon named Screwtape to his inexperienced nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter. The setting is a spiritual battlefield in which the unseen powers of Hell attempt to secure the damnation of a single human soul, referred to only as “the patient,” while God—called “the Enemy” by the demons—works to draw that same person toward salvation. Each letter addresses a particular stage of the patient’s life, from his initial conversion to Christianity through seasons of spiritual dryness, social distraction, wartime anxiety, and shifting romantic attachments. Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the subtle arts of temptation: encouraging intellectual vanity, stoking resentment toward churchgoers, using fatigue and routine to dull devotion, and exploiting fear and cowardice during the Second World War. A recurring framework is the demons’ preference for gradual, unnoticed drift over dramatic sin, since small compromises are less likely to provoke repentance. Lewis also satirizes human institutions and fashions, showing how virtue can be counterfeited, and introduces a memorable twist when Screwtape’s own rhetoric of power and appetite is exposed as hollow and self-destroying. Although the patient’s fate is not dwelled upon in the setup, the novel’s central argument is that free will, humility, and ordinary faithfulness are the true battlegrounds of the spiritual life. The book remains widely read as a witty, inverted devotional classic rather than a conventional narrative.
