The Second Sex

Simone de Beauvoir’s *The Second Sex*, first published in 1949, is a foundational work of existentialist feminism. Its central claim is that “one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,” meaning femininity is a cultural construction imposed on biological females rather than an inherent essence. Beauvoir, a French philosopher aligned with Jean-Paul Sartre, argues that men have been defined as the default human subject while women are cast as the Other—inessential, relative, and defined only in relation to men. The book is divided into two volumes. The first, “Facts and Myths,” examines biology, psychoanalysis, and historical materialism, then traces how patriarchy developed from nomadic societies through ancient Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, and the French Revolution. It also analyzes myths of woman in literature by authors such as Montherlant, D. H. Lawrence, and Claudel. The second volume, “Lived Experience,” follows a woman’s life from childhood, adolescence, and sexual initiation through marriage, motherhood, and old age. Beauvoir describes how girls are taught passivity and dependence, how marriage transforms women into domestic dependents, and how motherhood and housework can limit transcendence. She critiques romantic love, chastity, and prostitution as institutions that reinforce women’s subordination. Her proposed path to liberation involves economic independence, access to meaningful work, and the ability to transcend prescribed roles. The book’s famous line about becoming a woman encapsulates its existentialist ethic: freedom lies in choosing and creating oneself, not in fulfilling a fixed feminine nature. Widely translated and debated, *The Second Sex* remains a landmark of twentieth-century philosophy.
