The Second Shift

Arlie Russell Hochschild's The Second Shift, first published in 1989, examines the hidden labor women perform at home after finishing their paid workday. Drawing on intensive interviews and participant observation with fifty California couples across two-worker households, Hochschild and her research team followed families over several years in the late 1970s and 1980s, documenting how domestic tasks and child care were divided. Her central finding is a persistent "leisure gap": working women averaged roughly an extra month of twenty-four-hour days per year on housework and parenting compared with their husbands, a burden she names the second shift. Hochschild introduces the idea of "gender strategies"—the conscious and unconscious plans couples use to justify or manage unequal divisions—and identifies three marital patterns: traditional, egalitarian, and transitional, with transitional couples being the most common and the most conflicted. She also develops the concept of a "stalled revolution," arguing that women's rapid entry into paid work was not matched by men's increased participation at home or by workplace and social policies such as affordable child care and parental leave. The book profiles couples including Nancy and Evan Holt, whose "upstairs-downstairs" compromise assigned child care and the garage to Evan while Nancy absorbed the rest, illustrating how couples rationalize imbalance. Hochschild also explores how men who share domestic work may face cultural penalties, and how women often develop "second shift" coping mechanisms like taking the "mother" role or reducing standards. The Second Shift became a foundational text in the sociology of family, work, and gender, influencing later research on the "mental load" and time-use studies.
