The Silk Roads

Peter Frankopan’s "The Silk Roads: A New History of the World" (2015) recenters global history on the network of trade routes linking Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and China, rather than treating Europe as the engine of world events. Frankopan argues that the region between the Mediterranean and the Himalayas was, for most of recorded history, the true center of wealth, power, and cultural exchange, and that this centrality persisted long after overland caravans gave way to sea routes and, later, oil pipelines. The book is structured as a sweeping chronological narrative rather than a thematic how-to, moving from the rise of the Persian and Roman empires through the spread of Islam, the Mongol conquests, the age of European exploration, and the imperial scrambles of the nineteenth century. Recurring through these chapters are the goods and ideas that traveled the routes: silk, spices, paper, gunpowder, religions such as Buddhism, Islam, and Nestorian Christianity, and, crucially, disease, including the plague. Frankopan also stresses the exchange of technologies and scientific knowledge between Islamic, Chinese, and Indian centers of learning. Later sections trace how the discovery of the Americas and the opening of Atlantic trade shifted gravity westward, only for the twentieth and twenty-first centuries to restore the region’s importance through oil reserves in the Persian Gulf and Central Asia. He closes by examining modern great-power competition over energy and trade corridors, framing current geopolitics as a return to older patterns. The result is a revisionist world history that treats connectivity across Eurasia, not any single civilization, as the main driver of change.
