Albert Camus's novel The Stranger, first published in 1943 as L'Étranger and translated into English by Stuart Gilbert in 1946, is a cornerstone of existentialist and absurdist literature. The narrative follows Meursault, a French Algerian office clerk living in Algiers, whose emotional detachment defines the story from its opening line about his mother's death. Camus structures the novel in two parts. The first chronicles Meursault's mundane routines, his affair with a former coworker named Marie Cardona, his friendship with a pimp named Raymond Sintès, and a violent encounter on a sun-drenched beach that results in Meursault killing an Arab man. The second part shifts to his arrest, trial, and imprisonment, where the court judges him less for the murder than for his failure to display conventional grief at his mother's funeral. The novel embodies Camus's philosophy of the absurd—the tension between humans' desire for meaning and the universe's indifference. Meursault represents the absurd hero who refuses to feign emotions he does not feel or accept society's prescribed narratives. The oppressive Algerian heat, particularly during the pivotal beach scene, functions as a recurring motif, suggesting environmental forces beyond rational control. Camus based the legal proceedings partly on real court cases where defendants' characters were scrutinized more than their crimes. The Stranger remains one of the most widely taught French novels of the twentieth century, notable for its spare, unadorned prose style and its unflinching examination of mortality, social conformity, and the limits of meaning in an indifferent world.
