John Grisham’s 1998 legal thriller The Street Lawyer follows Michael Brock, a high-paid antitrust associate at the Washington, D.C. firm Drake & Sweeney. A homeless man briefly seizes the firm’s office and is later killed by police, sending Brock into an ethical spiral. Investigating the man’s past, he discovers the firm concealed its eviction of poor tenants from a building it secretly owned—an act that led to the man’s homelessness and death. The book critiques how large firms profit from gentrification and the criminalization of homelessness, and asks whether individual conscience can survive institutional loyalty. It spent months on bestseller lists and was adapted into a 1999 film starring Michael Sheen, though the movie changed the ending. The title’s “street lawyer” refers to lawyers who serve clients living on the streets, not to a lawyer who is homeless.
