Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises follows Jake Barnes, an American journalist and World War I veteran living in Paris, and Lady Brett Ashley, the twice-divorced Englishwoman he loves but cannot have. The book helped define the “Lost Generation,” a term Gertrude Stein reportedly coined for the expatriates who came of age during the war. The title comes from Ecclesiastes, suggesting endurance amid futility. Its 1926 publication made Hemingway famous and shaped later American fiction.
