The Vaccine Book

In The Vaccine Book, pediatrician Robert W. Sears addresses parents’ most common questions about childhood immunization in a deliberately non-polemical, decision-support format. The book’s best-known feature is its “alternative vaccine schedule,” which Sears presents alongside the standard schedule recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rather than urging parents to reject vaccines outright, Sears argues that the total number of shots given in a single visit can be spread out, that some vaccines can be delayed until a child is older, and that combination vaccines should sometimes be separated into individual components. He also discusses selective or delayed use of certain vaccines, such as hepatitis B and varicella, based on a family’s assessment of risk. The book is organized by disease, with each chapter covering a specific illness—such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis A and B, pneumococcal disease, and influenza. Within each chapter, Sears describes the disease itself, the vaccine’s ingredients and manufacturing method, known side effects and risks, and his own recommendations. He classifies vaccines into categories based on his view of their relative necessity and safety, and he provides tables comparing the standard and alternative schedules. Sears writes from the perspective of a practicing pediatrician and a parent, acknowledging that families hold widely differing values about risk. The book also reviews vaccine ingredients such as aluminum and thimerosal, discusses the debunked link between vaccines and autism, and offers guidance on communicating with pediatricians. It became a popular reference for vaccine-hesitant parents while drawing criticism from public health authorities, who note that the alternative schedule is not evidence-based and may leave children unprotected during vulnerable periods.
