What Technology Wants

In What Technology Wants, Kevin Kelly argues that technology is not merely a collection of tools but a self-organizing system with its own trajectory, which he calls the technium. Kelly, a founding editor of Wired, proposes that this system behaves in some ways like a living organism, exhibiting tendencies he traces across the history of life and human invention—toward increasing complexity, diversity, specialization, ubiquity, sentience, and evolvability. Drawing on ideas from his earlier book Out of Control, he frames technology as the seventh kingdom of life, alongside bacteria, fungi, and animals. A central claim is that technology's direction is largely determined by physics, chemistry, and the structure of information, not by any single inventor or culture. Kelly illustrates this with the concept of simultaneous invention: when the necessary precursors exist, someone will build the telephone, the light bulb, or the transistor, and if one person fails, another succeeds. He calls the resulting momentum the technium's "wants," while stressing that these wants are tendencies, not fate, leaving room for human choice. Kelly also examines the costs of technology, including its role in environmental damage and alienation, and weighs critiques from neo-Luddite thinkers. He proposes choosing technologies not by whether they are new but by whether they increase options, cooperation, and long-term flourishing.
