White Teeth

Zadie Smith’s debut novel White Teeth, published in 2000, follows two wartime friends in North London: Archibald Jones, an Englishman rescued from a suicide attempt in his car, and Samad Iqbal, a Bengali Muslim and former soldier in the British Army. Their lives intertwine across decades, beginning with their service in World War II and continuing through the marriages, migrations, and midlife crises of the 1970s and 1980s. The novel is set primarily in the multicultural London neighborhoods of Willesden and Cricklewood, where Smith herself grew up. The book unfolds in four titled sections—Archie 1974, 1945, Samad 1984, 1857, Irie 1990, 1907, and Magid, Millat, and Marcus 1992, 1999—each anchoring present-day action to a historical moment, including the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the arrival of a colonial ancestor. Archibald marries a Jamaican woman, Clara Bowden, whose daughter Irie becomes friends with Samad’s twin sons, Magid and Millat. Samad, troubled by his sons’ assimilation, makes a fateful decision to send one of them back to Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the Chalfen family—geneticist Marcus and his wife Joyce—introduce the novel’s recurring motif of genetic engineering and the desire to perfect or preserve identity. A secondary plot involves the militant group KEVIN (Keepers of the Eternal and Victorious Islamic Nation) and a radical animal-rights faction, culminating in a chaotic confrontation at a conference. White Teeth explores themes of colonial history, immigration, hybridity, religious fundamentalism, and scientific determinism versus chance. Smith’s comic, digressive style and her use of multiple perspectives examine how roots, faith, and genetics both bind and divide families. The novel won the Whitbread First Novel Award and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and it was adapted into a 2002 Channel 4 television series.
