Emily Brontë’s only novel, Wuthering Heights, was published in 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell. Set on the remote Yorkshire moors, it unfolds largely through framed narration: Mr. Lockwood, a newcomer renting Thrushcross Grange, hears the story from the housekeeper Ellen “Nelly” Dean, whose account spans two generations of the Earnshaw and Linton families. The central figures are Heathcliff, an orphan brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, and Catherine Earnshaw, his fierce childhood companion. Their bond, intense and socially impossible, drives the novel’s conflicts after Catherine marries the gentler Edgar Linton. Heathcliff’s return and his schemes of revenge against both families form the book’s turbulent middle, while the second generation—including Catherine’s daughter Cathy and Heathcliff’s son Linton, as well as Hareton Earnshaw—carries the plot toward its resolution. Distinctive to the novel are its doubled structure of narrators, its stark contrast between the stormy heights and the civilized Grange, and its Gothic atmosphere of ghosts, illness, and obsessive love. Brontë experiments with unreliable narration and time shifts, withholding sympathy from nearly every character. Far from a conventional Victorian romance, Wuthering Heights examines class, inheritance, and the destructive and redemptive possibilities of passion across two intertwined families.
