Alone Together

In *Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other*, MIT sociologist Sherry Turkle examines how digital devices and sociable robots are reshaping human intimacy. Drawing on nearly fifteen years of fieldwork—interviews, surveys, and ethnographic observation—she argues that we are increasingly drawn to connections that offer the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship, a condition she calls being "alone together." The book unfolds in two parts. The first, on "the robotic moment," explores people's attachments to relational artifacts: Tamagotchis, Furby, AIBO robotic dogs, and the companionable robots Paro and Kismet. Turkle describes children confiding in digital pets and elders accepting robot caretakers, showing how we nurture machines and then find ourselves moved by their seeming affection. The second part turns to the networked life: email, texting, social media, and the "Goldilocks effect" of seeking connection at just the right distance, plus the new etiquette of "padding" conversations with a phone. She reports on teenagers who prefer texting to talking, on the performance of identity online, and on the way continual connectivity erodes solitude—the capacity to be alone with one's thoughts, which she treats as a prerequisite for genuine relationship. Her central claim is that we are at a turning point, a "time of temptation," when robotic companions seem preferable to the messiness of people and online networks promise closeness while delivering fragmentation. Turkle does not condemn technology outright; she asks readers to reclaim conversation, solitude, and the slower, riskier work of knowing another person. The book became a touchstone in debates about screens, empathy, and the texture of modern social life.
