Evicted

In *Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City*, sociologist Matthew Desmond chronicles eight families in Milwaukee during 2008 and 2009, showing how eviction functions less as a rare misfortune than as a routine mechanism of American poverty. The book moves between two worlds in the same city: a predominantly Black inner-city neighborhood on the North Side, where tenants like Arleen Belle, a mother of two boys, struggle against mounting rent debt, and a white trailer park on the South Side, where tenants contend with a different landlord's calculations. Threaded through both is the central framework Desmond calls the "eviction machine"—the interlocking system of landlords, courts, sheriffs, movers, and storage operators that profits from forced displacement. Desmond, who lived in those neighborhoods for months, pairs his fieldwork with quantitative research: he finds that eviction is a cause, not merely a condition, of poverty, pushing families into worse housing, destabilizing employment, and removing children from schools. He follows landlords like Sherrena Tarver, a former schoolteacher who views her properties as a business and her tenants as unreliable, and Tobin Charney, who runs the trailer park, alongside tenants such as Scott, a nurse and heroin addict, and Larraine, whose disability check rarely covers her lot rent. The narrative shows how the shortage of affordable housing compels poor families to spend most of their income on rent, leaving no margin for a missed paycheck or an emergency. Published in 2016, *Evicted* won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and drew on Desmond's own survey data, later expanded into the Eviction Lab at Princeton. Its argument is structural rather than individual: the private rental market, not personal failure, generates the housing instability that traps families.
