In Behave, neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky asks why humans do terrible things to one another and why we occasionally act with remarkable decency. His answer unfolds across a single behavior—from its neural trigger to its evolutionary origins—in a temporal framework that moves from one second before an action to millions of years before it. The book's central organizing device is this backward-in-time structure: chapters examine what happens in the brain in the instant before behavior, then hormones and sensory cues minutes to hours earlier, then neural plasticity across the lifespan, then childhood development, then culture and genes, and finally evolutionary pressures.
