Creative Schools

In Creative Schools, Ken Robinson and co-author Lou Aronica argue that today’s standardized, test-driven education systems are failing students and that schooling must be rethought around individual creativity and purpose. Building on Robinson’s earlier critiques in Out of Our Minds and The Element, the book presents a manifesto for transforming education from the ground up. Robinson and Aronica identify four core purposes that education should serve: economic, cultural, social, and personal. Real-world examples run throughout, drawn from visits to schools in the US, UK, and elsewhere, including innovative public schools, charter networks, and alternative programs that emphasize personalized learning, arts integration, and student voice. Robinson criticizes the “No Child Left Behind” and “Race to the Top” policies in the US, and the English “National Curriculum” and inspection regime, as examples of misguided reform. He calls for alternative assessment methods, such as portfolios, projects, and performance-based evaluations, rather than multiple-choice tests. The book is aimed at parents, educators, and policymakers, not as a single blueprint but as a set of principles and examples meant to provoke debate about what schools could become.
