Democracy and Education

John Dewey’s Democracy and Education, published in 1916, remains the foundational text of progressive education. Subtitled An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education, it argues that education is not preparation for life but life itself, and that a democratic society depends on schooling that develops shared interests, critical intelligence, and the capacity for continual growth. Dewey rejects the traditional split between abstract academic subjects and vocational training, insisting both must connect to experience. His central concept, growth, defines education as the reconstruction of experience that deepens meaning and increases one’s ability to direct later learning. He distinguishes educative experiences from mis-educative ones that arrest growth, and frames interest and effort as complementary rather than opposed. The book moves from a philosophy of experience to the social function of education, then to democracy as a mode of associated living characterized by shared interests and free interaction. Dewey critiques both the old education of passive recitation and romantic child-centered excesses, advocating purposeful activity and reflective inquiry. Subsequent chapters address aims, interest, thinking, method, subject matter, and the relation of play and work. He presents the school as a miniature community where children learn through occupations and projects that mirror social life, and he analyzes the evolution of subject matter from everyday experience toward organized disciplines. He also treats vocational education, intellectual and moral development, and the idea that the school must cultivate democratic dispositions rather than mere obedience. Though written a century ago, Democracy and Education continues to shape debates over curriculum, citizenship, and experiential learning, offering a systematic philosophy rather than a set of practical techniques.
