Disciplined Entrepreneurship

In Disciplined Entrepreneurship, MIT Sloan professor Bill Aulet argues that entrepreneurship can be taught as a rigorous, repeatable process rather than a matter of innate genius or luck. Drawing on his experience leading MIT's Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship, Aulet distills the venture-creation process into a 24-step framework, organized around six themes: who is your customer, what can you do for them, how do they acquire your product, how do you make money, how do you design and build it, and how do you scale. Central to the book is the concept of the beachhead market: rather than targeting a broad market, a startup should dominate a small, well-defined initial market with a complete end-user profile, then expand to adjacent markets. Aulet introduces widely used tools such as the end-user profile, the total addressable market (TAM) sizing exercise, the persona, the quantified value proposition, and the decision-making unit, which maps out who actually influences a purchase. Other steps include competitive positioning, the "life cycle of a customer" adoption process, pricing via the LTV (lifetime value) framework, and the five-step process for building a product. Aulet also emphasizes the importance of primary market research over secondary research and presents the "new venture creation" as a series of testable hypotheses to validate step by step before scaling. Unlike lean-startup works that focus narrowly on iteration, the book provides a structured, sequential curriculum; it grew out of Aulet's MIT course and is paired with a companion workbook of exercises. The second edition adds updates on digital and platform businesses. The core claim is that disciplined, customer-focused execution, not charismatic inspiration, is what separates successful ventures from failed ones.
