In Traction, entrepreneur and business coach Gino Wickman lays out the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), a complete set of practical tools for running a small to mid-sized company. Wickman developed EOS over roughly a decade as president of his family’s manufacturing business, then refined it through his consulting firm, and the book presents it as a way to help leadership teams gain “traction” — the discipline to execute on a clear vision. The system rests on six core components: Vision, People, Data, Issues, Process, and Traction. Wickman walks readers through each, supplying specific instruments rather than abstract advice. Leaders build a Vision/Traction Organizer to capture an eight-question plan covering core values, a core focus, a ten-year target, a three-year picture, and one-year goals. The Accountability Chart defines seats and responsibilities in the organization, while the People Analyzer assesses whether employees fit the company’s core values and their roles. Weekly Scorecards track five to fifteen leading numeric indicators, and an Issues List, worked through with the Identify-Discuss-Solve method, keeps problems from festering. Wickman also describes the Level 10 Meeting agenda that gives teams a consistent weekly rhythm, and the Process Documenter, which simplifies each core process into a handful of steps. A running argument of the book is that most organizations stall not from a lack of ideas but from a lack of focus, discipline, and follow-through. Wickman addresses this with Rocks — a limited set of quarterly priorities — and the concept of “same page” leadership, where the team must be aligned before the rest of the company can be. Throughout, he emphasizes simplicity and repetition, urging that EOS be implemented as a fully integrated operating system rather than a collection of isolated fixes.
