Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Betty Edwards’s *Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain*, first published in 1979, rests on the argument that most adults cannot draw not from a lack of talent but because they rely on the brain’s verbal, symbolic left-hemisphere mode, which substitutes stored icons for actual observation. Drawing instruction, she contends, is really a perceptual shift training exercise. The book is organized around a five-day workshop structure and introduces now-famous techniques designed to force this shift: copying a Picasso upside down to defeat naming, drawing the negative space around a chair, using a plastic viewfinder to flatten perspective, and completing modified contour drawings of one’s own hand without looking at the paper. Edwards builds on Roger Sperry’s split-brain research to frame a left/right hemispheric model, though she treats it as a working metaphor rather than strict neuroscience. Central chapters address edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadows, and the gestalt, collectively called the “five perceptual skills,” plus a later chapter on color. A signature device is the “Vase/Faces” exercise, in which students alternate between perceiving a profile and a symmetrical vase, to demonstrate how the brain flips between competing interpretations. The book includes post-instruction drawings by ordinary students alongside their pre-instruction work, which functions as its chief evidence. Edwards also discusses “R-mode” and “L-mode” states and recommends strategies such as pure contour drawing to suppress verbal interference. Revised editions add material on handwriting, portraiture, and creativity. It has been widely adopted in art classrooms and translated into numerous languages, making it one of the best-selling drawing manuals of the modern era.
