Edmund Morris’s *Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan* is a biography of the fortieth U.S. president, published in 1999 after the author spent fourteen years researching and interviewing Reagan and his circle. Its most distinctive feature is that Morris inserts himself into the narrative as a fictional character, “Edmund Morris,” an invented narrator who supposedly witnesses Reagan’s life firsthand—a device that stirred considerable controversy among historians and critics. The book traces Reagan from his boyhood in Dixon, Illinois, through his Hollywood career, his presidency of the Screen Actors Guild, his terms as California governor, and his two terms in the White House. Morris organizes the material around the idea that Reagan was a man of layered, often contradictory selves: a private figure who remained partly unknowable even to those closest to him. The biography revisits major episodes such as the 1980 election, the attempted assassination in 1981, the Iran-Contra affair, and Reagan’s summits with Mikhail Gorbachev, while also exploring his marriage to Nancy and his relationship with his children. Morris, who had previously won a Pulitzer Prize for his Theodore Roosevelt biography, drew on access to Reagan’s personal papers and interviews with family, aides, and political allies.
