Free to Choose

Milton Friedman’s *Free to Choose*, co-written with his wife Rose Friedman and published in 1980, argues that voluntary exchange and competitive markets outperform government planning in securing prosperity and personal liberty. The book grew out of a ten-part PBS television series and is organized around a simple causal claim: the growth of government since the New Deal has eroded freedom without delivering promised benefits. Each chapter pairs a historical episode with an economic lesson. The opening chapter, “The Power of the Market,” uses the pencil—its wood, graphite, and rubber assembled by no central planner—to illustrate how prices coordinate strangers. “The Tyranny of Controls” examines rent control, price ceilings, and wage floors, contending they create shortages and black markets. “What’s Wrong with Our Schools” proposes vouchers, letting parents choose schools and forcing institutions to compete. “Who Protects the Worker?” disputes the idea that unions and licensing raise general wages, arguing they mainly protect insiders. “The Cure for Inflation” blames monetary expansion by the Federal Reserve, not oil shocks or unions. Later chapters trace the intellectual roots of the welfare state and the erosion of economic freedom in Britain and the United States, and the concluding chapter defends a limited state that enforces contracts, provides national defense, and funds a negative income tax to replace piecemeal welfare programs. The Friedmans draw on the Chicago school tradition, American colonial history, Hong Kong’s laissez-faire growth, and post-war Japan and India as contrasting cases. The book became a defining popular statement of free-market economics and influenced policy debates during the Reagan and Thatcher era.
