In a Dark, Dark Wood

Ruth Ware’s debut psychological thriller In a Dark, Dark Wood follows Leonora “Nora” Shaw, a reclusive crime writer living in London, who is invited to a “hen” (bachelorette) weekend for Clare, a friend from school she has not seen in a decade. The invitation comes from Flo, Clare’s intense and possessive new best friend, and the gathering takes place at a remote glass-walled house in the English countryside, surrounded by dense forest with no phone signal or nearby neighbors. The narrative explores friendship, jealousy, resentment, and the ways old wounds can resurface. The title evokes the children’s rhyme about a dark, dark wood, reinforcing the novel’s ominous atmosphere. The book is a standalone thriller, not part of a series, and it helped establish Ware as a leading voice in contemporary psychological suspense. It focuses on the slow unraveling of a group dynamic under pressure rather than on forensic detail or police procedure.
