Interpreter of Maladies

Interpreter of Maladies is the debut collection of nine short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri, published in 1999 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000. Though often shelved as a novel, Lahiri's book is actually a story cycle whose narratives center on Bengali and Indian American characters navigating displacement. The opening story, "A Temporary Matter," follows Shukumar and Shoba, a Boston couple whose marriage frays during nightly power outages. "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine" is told through the eyes of a young Indian American girl whose family hosts a homesick Pakistani visitor during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. The title story concerns Mrs. Das, an American tourist in India, who confesses a secret to her tour guide, Mr. Kapasi, whom she misreads as a romantic figure because he also translates Gujarati for a doctor. Other stories include "Sexy," in which a young woman in Boston has an affair with a married Indian man, and "The Third and Final Continent," about an Indian immigrant rooming with an elderly landlady in 1969 Cambridge, Massachusetts. Settings shuttle between Calcutta, Boston, and New England suburbs. Recurring concerns are arranged marriage, isolation, cross-cultural miscommunication, and the quiet disappointments of diaspora life. Lahiri's prose is restrained and observational, favoring domestic detail over dramatic incident. The collection helped establish the Indian American short story as a prominent literary form in the late 1990s.
