Living with Complexity

In *Living with Complexity*, Don Norman argues that complexity is not the enemy of good design—confusion is. The book responds directly to the cult of simplicity that followed his earlier *The Design of Everyday Things*, insisting that many things people call "too complex" (airline cockpits, hospital equipment, kitchen gadgets) are actually richly functional and emotionally satisfying once their underlying logic is made visible. Norman's core distinction is between complexity, which reflects the genuine intricacy of a task or world, and complication, which is needless confusion that designers create. A central framework is the idea of "social signifiers"—cues, often from other people or the environment, that tell us how to behave with a device or system. Norman contrasts conceptual models, the stories we build to understand how something works, with the visible signals that guide us moment to moment. He draws on examples such as thermostats, automobile dashboards, hospital infusion pumps, and the controls of commercial aircraft to show how good design tames complexity without dumbing it down. He also examines "desire lines" and the ways people customize and adapt products to fit their own lives, arguing that imposed simplicity often fails because users have different needs and skill levels. Norman discusses the role of waiting, interruption, and memory in everyday interaction, and criticizes the notion that technology should disappear entirely. He suggests designers should instead make systems understandable, forgiving, and pleasurable to master. The book sits firmly in design theory and cognitive science, extending the vocabulary of affordances, feedback, and mapping he popularized. It is less a how-to manual than a persuasive essay: complexity can be beautiful and worth preserving, provided the design respects human cognition and communicates clearly how things are meant to work.
