Napoleon

Andrew Roberts’s "Napoleon: A Life" is a single-volume biography that sets out to reassess Napoleon Bonaparte without either the hero-worship of early admirers or the hostile caricature favored by British historians. Roberts draws heavily on the recently completed Fondation Napoléon edition of Napoleon’s correspondence, using tens of thousands of his letters to let the subject speak in his own voice. The book follows Napoleon chronologically, from his Corsican childhood and artillery training through the Italian and Egyptian campaigns, the 1799 Brumaire coup, his years as First Consul and Emperor, the great victories at Austerlitz, Jena, and Wagram, the disastrous Russian invasion of 1812, and the final defeats at Leipzig and Waterloo before exile on Saint Helena. A central argument is that Napoleon was above all a pragmatic modernizer rather than an ideological conqueror. Roberts stresses his administrative achievements, including the Napoleonic Code, the prefectoral system, the Bank of France, a centralized education system, and the Concordat with the Catholic Church. He also emphasizes Napoleon’s remarkable capacity for work, his memory for military detail, and his talent for inspiring soldiers. Roberts does not ignore darker aspects: the reinstatement of slavery in the colonies, the heavy casualties of his wars, and his authoritarian control of the press and police. He argues, however, that Napoleon’s posthumous reputation was largely shaped by British propaganda and that his influence on European law, administration, and nationalism was profound and lasting. The biography, widely praised for its narrative drive and scholarship, presents Napoleon as a flawed but extraordinary figure whose shadow extended well beyond his death in 1821.
