No Country for Old Men

Cormac McCarthy’s novel No Country for Old Men is a stark crime western set in the deserts and border towns of West Texas in 1980. The story begins when Llewelyn Moss, a welder and Vietnam veteran hunting antelope, discovers a drug deal gone wrong: bullet-riddled trucks, dead men, and a briefcase containing two million dollars. Moss takes the money, an act that sets in motion a relentless pursuit. The principal antagonist is Anton Chigurh, a hired killer who wields a captive bolt stunner and a sawed-off shotgun, and who operates by a chilling private code in which chance, often a coin toss, decides whether a victim lives. Chigurh’s pursuit of Moss is patient, methodical, and nearly supernatural in its indifference to ordinary limits. The third major figure is Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, an aging lawman whose first-person reflections open each chapter, framing the manhunt as a meditation on a world he no longer recognizes. Bell’s monologues, delivered in a plain, elegiac West Texas voice, contrast with the novel’s spare, third-person narration of violence. McCarthy’s distinctive framework is this triangulation: hunter, hunted, and witness. The book is not a conventional thriller of detection; Bell arrives at scenes too late, and his investigation is largely a record of aftermath. The title, drawn from William Butler Yeats’s poem “Sailing to Babylon,” signals the theme of a land rendered alien to its old men. The novel explores fate, moral erosion, and the limits of law through a landscape of motels, hospitals, and desert highways. It was published in 2005 and later adapted into the Coen brothers’ Academy Award-winning film.
