Philosophical Investigations

Ludwig Wittgenstein’s *Philosophical Investigations*, published posthumously in 1953, is a foundational text of twentieth-century philosophy. The book, written in German as *Philosophische Untersuchungen*, is composed of two parts: a long sequence of numbered remarks and a later section on the philosophy of psychology. Its central method is the “language-game,” a term Wittgenstein uses to describe the many ways language is embedded in human activities, such as giving orders, describing objects, reporting events, or telling jokes. Meaning, he argues, is not a fixed mental image or a logical form but arises from use within a form of life. The opening sections famously critique his earlier *Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus*, particularly the picture theory of meaning. Wittgenstein introduces the notion of “family resemblances” to show that concepts like “game” need not share one essential feature; instead, they overlap in a network of similarities. He also develops the “private language argument,” questioning whether a language intelligible only to one individual is possible. The book’s style is dialogical, full of imagined interlocutors, examples, and questions rather than formal proofs. It explores rule-following, intention, sensation, and aspect-seeing—such as the duck-rabbit figure—to dissolve philosophical puzzles rather than solve them. The work has deeply influenced ordinary language philosophy, cognitive science, and literary theory, though it remains deliberately unsystematic and resistant to summary.
