Michael Wolff’s Siege: Trump Under Fire, published in 2019, is the sequel to his controversial bestseller Fire and Fury. The book covers roughly the second year of Donald Trump’s presidency, from mid-2017 into 2018, and is built from Wolff’s characteristic blend of embedded reporting, leaked conversations, and reconstructed dialogue attributed to unnamed sources. Its central argument is that the Trump White House functioned less as a coherent administration than as a rolling series of personal, legal, and political sieges closing in on the president. Wolff organizes the narrative around several overlapping threats. The most prominent is the special counsel investigation led by Robert Mueller, which the book treats as an existential pressure on Trump and a source of obsessive speculation among staff. A second thread follows the fallout from the Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal scandals, the hush-money arrangements, and the legal exposure they created for Trump and his circle. A third focuses on the internal dysfunction among aides and family members, including the shifting roles of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the marginalization or departure of figures such as Steve Bannon and Hope Hicks, and the revolving door of lawyers and communications staff. Wolff also devotes attention to Trump’s foreign and domestic flashpoints of that period: the Singapore summit with Kim Jong-un, the Helsinki meeting with Vladimir Putin, the family-separation policy at the border, and the Supreme Court confirmation fight over Brett Kavanaugh. Throughout, the book portrays a president increasingly isolated, reliant on a shrinking inner circle, and convinced that hostile institutions—the press, the Justice Department, and parts of his own government—are out to destroy him. Siege is less a chronological history than a thematic portrait of a presidency under constant legal and personal assault, and it became a major news event upon release because of its vivid, often unflattering anecdotes about the people around Trump.
