Simon Sebag Montefiore’s Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar is a landmark history of Joseph Stalin’s dictatorship, built around the central framework of the “court” rather than a conventional solo biography. Montefiore, drawing on previously closed Soviet archives opened after 1991, portrays Stalin as a paranoid yet magnetic ruler presiding over an inner circle whose members—Molotov, Kaganovich, Beria, Khrushchev, Zhdanov, and others—jockeyed for favour while fearing for their lives. The book’s pages turn on the rhythm of Kremlin dinners, dacha nights, and Politburo intrigues, showing how ideology, terror, and personal loyalty fused. Its distinctive arguments include that Stalin was not simply a faceless bureaucrat but a highly political, socially adept manipulator who governed through a family-like but lethal camarilla. Montefiore traces how the dictator mixed genuine Marxist conviction with gangster pragmatism, and how the Great Terror, the wartime alliance and victory, and the postwar anti-Jewish campaigns were shaped by the court’s internal rivalries as much as by strategic logic. Key set pieces include the purges of the Old Bolsheviks, Stalin’s wartime role as Supreme Commander, and the so-called Doctors’ Plot. The narrative extends to Stalin’s family—his wives and children—and to the surreal domesticity of his inner circle. First published in 2003 and later split into two volumes, it won the Samuel Johnson Prize and remains a widely cited popular history of Stalinism, praised for archival detail and criticised by some scholars for anecdotal vividness. It covers the era from the 1920s to Stalin’s death in 1953.
