The Art of Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie, co-authored with J. Berg Esenwein and first published in 1915, predates Carnegie’s better-known How to Win Friends and Influence People by over two decades. Written as a practical textbook for students and teachers, it opens with a striking claim: that effective speaking is not an inborn gift but a trainable skill, and that “the will to conquer” matters more than natural talent. The book is organized into chapters on distinct technical problems, including acquiring confidence, “forcing” ideas through preparation, voice culture, vocal expression, gesture, and the management of the body while speaking. Carnegie and Esenwein devote whole sections to pacing, pause, and pitch, treating the voice as an instrument that must be deliberately developed. Distinctive to this book is its insistence on concrete practice over theory: each chapter closes with exercises—“drills”—in breathing, articulation, and vocal modulation, and with suggested speaking topics. The authors analyze successful orators such as Wendell Phillips and Henry Ward Beecher, alongside passages from literature used as recitation material. They also address the psychological causes of stage fright—self-consciousness and fear of failure—and prescribe habitual exposure and thorough preparation as remedies. The book argues that the speaker’s objective is not to display knowledge but to communicate feeling and conviction, and that the audience, not the speaker, should be the center of attention. While some advice reflects its era, its core framework—treating speaking as a craft taught through structured drills, voice work, and repeated practice—remains its defining contribution to the communication shelf.
