Shelby Foote’s *The Civil War: A Narrative* is not a single book but a three-volume history—*Fort Sumter to Perryville*, *Fredericksburg to Meridian*, and *Red River to Appomattox*—originally published between 1958 and 1974. Foote, a Mississippi novelist turned historian, wrote the trilogy as a continuous literary narrative rather than an academic monograph, and it remains one of the most widely read accounts of the American Civil War.
