The Cloud of Unknowing

The Cloud of Unknowing is a medieval Christian mystical text written by an anonymous English author, likely a fourteenth-century priest or monk. The book addresses a young disciple and lays out a contemplative method for encountering God, arguing that God cannot be reached through intellect or reasoning but only through love. Its central metaphor is the "cloud of unknowing" that hangs between the seeker and God, paired with a "cloud of forgetting" placed beneath the seeker to blot out all created things and even the self. The author insists that the highest work of the contemplative life is a naked intention toward God, expressed through a single short word such as "God" or "sin," repeated as a prayer. Discursive meditation on God's attributes, while useful for beginners, must eventually be abandoned, because the intellect cannot grasp what God is. This apophatic, or negative, theology aligns the book with the earlier writings of Pseudo-Dionysius, though the author develops his own practical vocabulary of clouds, darts of longing, and the "sharp arrow of yearning love." Distinctive chapters address distractions, the role of humility, and the dangers of spiritual pride, warning against confusing contemplative prayer with emotional fervor or imaginative visions. A later section, sometimes called the "deep" or "ghostly" counsel, discusses how advanced contemplatives should respond when others seek their guidance.
