The Diary of a Young Girl

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank is the posthumously published wartime journal kept by a Jewish teenager hiding from Nazi persecution in Amsterdam. Written between 1942 and 1944, the diary records Anne’s life in the Secret Annex, a concealed set of rooms above her father Otto Frank’s former business premises at Prinsengracht 263, where eight people lived in hiding with the help of Dutch helpers. Anne received the red-and-white checkered diary for her thirteenth birthday and addressed many entries to “Kitty,” an imagined friend, a device that gives the book its intimate, conversational voice. The narrative moves from everyday tensions over food, noise, and cramped quarters to Anne’s reflections on adolescence, her evolving relationship with her mother and sister Margot, and her growing closeness to Peter van Pels. It also captures the fear of discovery, air raids, burglaries, and news of deportations, alongside Anne’s ambition to become a writer. A defining feature is the coexistence of ordinary teenage concerns with the unfolding catastrophe outside. Anne revised parts of the diary after hearing a radio appeal for wartime diaries, producing versions later distinguished by scholars as version A, B, and C. The book is not a retrospective memoir but a contemporaneous document, ending abruptly when the hiding place is betrayed in August 1944. Otto Frank survived and arranged publication in 1947, making the diary one of the most widely read firsthand accounts of the Holocaust.
