The Feminine Mystique

Betty Friedan’s "The Feminine Mystique," published in 1963, is a landmark work of social criticism that gave a name to the dissatisfaction felt by many postwar American women. Friedan, a former labor journalist and suburban housewife, argued that a powerful ideology she called the “feminine mystique” had convinced women that fulfillment came solely through marriage, motherhood, and domesticity. The book grew out of a survey Friedan conducted of her Smith College classmates for their fifteenth reunion, which revealed widespread unhappiness beneath the era’s ideal of the happy suburban homemaker. Friedan traced the mystique to postwar culture: women’s magazines, advertising, Freudian psychology, and social science that encouraged educated women to abandon careers and find identity through their husbands and children. She described the resulting “problem that has no name,” a quiet despair women could not articulate because they believed their circumstances were perfect. Chapters examine how education, marketing, and media trained women for domesticity, and how the mystique trapped them in unpaid, isolating labor. She also critiqued the ways women were discouraged from ambition and treated as consumers rather than full citizens. Friedan’s proposed solution was for women to pursue meaningful work and education outside the home, developing identities beyond wife and mother. Though later criticized for focusing largely on white, middle-class, college-educated housewives, the book is credited with helping spark second-wave feminism and with transforming how Americans discussed women’s roles, work, and equality.
