The Hero with a Thousand Faces

Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, first published in 1949, argues that world myths share a single underlying narrative pattern he calls the monomyth, or the hero’s journey. Drawing on psychoanalysis, comparative religion, and folklore, Campbell proposes that myths from widely separated cultures are variations on one story: a hero ventures from the ordinary world into a region of supernatural wonder, faces trials, and returns with power to bestow on others. The book is organized around the stages of that journey. Campbell divides it into the Departure, the Initiation, and the Return, breaking these into specific motifs such as the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Supernatural Aid, Crossing the First Threshold, the Belly of the Whale, the Road of Trials, the Meeting with the Goddess, Atonement with the Father, Apotheosis, the Ultimate Boon, and the Master of Two Worlds. He illustrates each with examples from Greek, Hindu, Buddhist, Native American, African, and Christian traditions—figures like Prometheus, the Buddha, and Christ—alongside fairy tales and dream material. Campbell interprets these recurring motifs through Jungian ideas, especially archetypes and the collective unconscious, treating the hero’s quest as a metaphor for individual psychological transformation and the integration of the self. The book’s second half applies the pattern to folklore and to modern life, arguing that myths remain maps for inner development. Though later scholars criticized its evidence and universalizing claims, the monomyth became widely influential, shaping screenwriting and popular storytelling.
