The History of the Ancient World

Susan Wise Bauer’s The History of the Ancient World, published in 2007, is the first volume of her trilogy surveying pre-modern history. Subtitled From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome, it spans roughly three thousand years, beginning with Sumerian king lists and ending with the collapse of the western Roman Empire. Bauer, a historian and classical educator, organizes the book chronologically rather than by civilization, interweaving Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, India, China, and Rome so that concurrent events illuminate one another. This comparative structure is the book’s distinctive framework: readers see Hammurabi, the Middle Kingdom, and the Vedic period unfolding side by side rather than in isolation. Bauer draws heavily on primary sources, including royal inscriptions, chronicles, and epics, and she treats ancient texts as evidence to be weighed rather than accepted literally. She flags where sources conflict or where legend likely masks political propaganda, as with the burial claims surrounding the early Egyptian pharaohs or the Trojan War narratives. The book’s cast is enormous, moving from Sargon of Akkad and Hatshepsut to Cyrus the Great, Alexander, Qin Shi Huang, and Constantine, but Bauer uses recurring themes to hold the narrative together: the rise of centralized states, the role of religion in legitimizing rulers, and the tension between empire and local identity. The History of the Ancient World is written in an accessible narrative style aimed at general readers and students rather than specialists, and it deliberately avoids academic footnotes in favor of storytelling.
