『The Housemaid's Secret』要約

The Housemaid’s Secret is a 2023 psychological thriller by Freida McFadden, the second book in The Housemaid series. It follows Millie Calloway, a former housekeeper with a criminal record who now works at a cleaning agency and lives with her boyfriend, Enzo. Millie is assigned to clean for Douglas Garrick, a wealthy tech executive who lives in a luxurious penthouse with his wife, Wendy. Douglas insists that Wendy is ill and must not be disturbed, but Millie hears her crying behind a locked door and notices strange restrictions around the apartment. When Millie finally meets Wendy, she discovers bruises and becomes convinced Douglas is abusing her. Unlike the first book, which centers on Millie as a live-in maid for the Winchester family, this installment shifts the suspense to Wendy’s hidden captivity and Douglas’s controlling behavior. The novel unfolds through Millie’s first-person narration, with a second perspective from Wendy revealed partway through, restructuring the reader’s understanding of events. Key set pieces include Millie smuggling a phone to Wendy, a failed escape attempt, and a confrontation in the penthouse. The central mystery concerns the true nature of Douglas and Wendy’s marriage and why Wendy is confined. McFadden’s signature twists recontextualize earlier scenes, a hallmark of the series. The book explores domestic abuse, manipulation, and survival, though it remains a fast-paced thriller rather than a social treatise. It is not a self-help book and contains no real-world research or experiments. It is a sequel set primarily in New York City, and its ending sets up the third novel, The Housemaid Is Watching.
