In The Ideal Team Player, Patrick Lencioni returns to the leadership fable format he popularized in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, this time to isolate the individual qualities that make someone a strong team member. The story is set at Valley Builders, a family-run construction company in Napa Valley, where a new CEO, Jeff Shanley, must fill a leadership vacancy while the firm juggles a surge of new projects and a strained culture. Lencioni uses this setup to introduce his central framework: the ideal team player is simultaneously humble, hungry, and smart.
