The Midnight Library

Matt Haig’s novel The Midnight Library follows Nora Seed, a depressed young woman in Bedford, England, who attempts suicide on the same night her cat dies and she loses her job. She wakes in a strange library between life and death, presided over by a former school librarian named Mrs. Elm. The shelves hold infinite volumes representing lives Nora could have lived had she made different choices—continuing her competitive swimming career, staying with her ex-boyfriend, becoming a glaciologist, pursuing music, or moving to Australia. The library’s governing framework is the idea that each book is a portal into one of those alternate lives. Nora can open a volume, step into that existence, and sample it as if it were already hers, complete with its own memories and relationships. If a life disappoints her, she returns to the library and tries another. The novel’s central mechanism is the “root” or “base” life versus these branching possibilities, echoing quantum many-worlds ideas in accessible, non-technical terms. Mrs. Elm offers guidance, but the choice of which life to attempt belongs to Nora. Crucially, the book argues against the fantasy of the perfect life. Each alternate existence carries its own grief, compromise, and unmet longings, and Nora begins to see that the value of a life is not measured by its apparent success or failure. The Midnight Library is therefore a philosophical novel about regret, depression, and the illusion of the road not taken, using the library as its central metaphor rather than offering prescriptive advice. It was published in 2020 and became a bestseller.
