The Romanovs

Simon Sebag Montefiore’s The Romanovs: 1613–1918 is a panoramic dynastic history of the Russian imperial family, told as a continuous narrative across twenty-eight generations and more than three hundred years. Montefiores organizes the book around the Romanovs themselves—tsars, empresses, consorts, heirs, and their extended kin—rather than around abstract themes, and he frames the dynasty’s story through the intimate mechanics of autocracy: succession struggles, court factions, dynastic marriages, and the private lives of rulers whose personal choices reshaped a vast empire. The book opens with the election of sixteen-year-old Michael Romanov in 1613, after the Time of Troubles, and closes with the execution of Nicholas II and his family in 1918. Along the way it covers Peter the Great’s forced modernization and founding of St. Petersburg, the palace revolutions that placed four empresses on the throne in the eighteenth century, Catherine the Great’s expansion and enlightened self-fashioning, the Napoleonic wars, the emancipation of the serfs under Alexander II, and the repressions and foreign entanglements that preceded the revolutions of 1917. Montefiore draws heavily on letters, diaries, and memoirs to depict the Romanovs as both public sovereigns and private people, emphasizing how autocracy concentrated enormous power in flawed individuals and how the dynasty’s refusal to reform its political system contributed to its collapse. The result is a narrative history of imperial Russia from the court outward, tracing how one family’s ambitions, marriages, and anxieties shaped the fate of an empire.
