The Shame of the Nation

In *The Shame of the Nation*, Jonathan Kozol documents the resegregation of American public schools roughly five decades after *Brown v. Board of Education*. Drawing on visits to nearly sixty schools in eleven states, Kozol argues that hypersegregated, nonwhite districts—many with 95 to 100 percent Black and Latino enrollment—have quietly become the norm in cities such as New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, and Los Angeles, producing what he calls "apartheid schooling" in a nation that congratulates itself on racial progress.
