Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point examines how small, specific actions can trigger sudden, dramatic change in social behavior, ideas, and products. Gladwell, a staff writer at The New Yorker, argues that change does not unfold gradually but often erupts at a single moment—the tipping point—when an idea or trend crosses a threshold and spreads like an epidemic. The book organizes its argument around three driving forces. The first is the Law of the Few, which holds that a handful of exceptional people drive epidemics: Connectors, who know many different kinds of people; Mavens, who accumulate and share knowledge; and Salesmen, who persuade through charisma and emotional contagion. The second is the Stickiness Factor, drawn from the famous "Sesame Street" and "Blue's Clues" research, showing that small changes in presentation can make a message memorable and lasting. The third is the Power of Context, illustrated by the "broken windows" theory of crime and the dramatic drop in New York City's crime rate in the 1990s, along with the "rule of 150," the idea that groups function best below a certain size. Gladwell develops these ideas through reported cases such as the revival of Hush Puppies shoes, Paul Revere's ride versus William Dawes's, and the spread of teenage smoking. He argues that understanding these mechanisms lets people deliberately engineer positive epidemics in marketing, public health, and social movements. Published in 2000, the book popularized the language of tipping points in business and culture and remains a widely cited work in the career and success genre.
