William James delivered The Varieties of Religious Experience as the Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh in 1901–1902, publishing the book in 1902. He also devotes sustained attention to saintliness—its ascetic, mystical, and charitable expressions—and to mysticism itself, arguing that mystical states are authoritative for those who experience them but not automatically binding on others. His conclusion, framed partly through his "over-beliefs," is that religious experience is justified by its practical fruits in a person's life, not by metaphysical proof. The book's lasting influence rests on its method: setting aside questions of doctrine and institutional authority to study religion as lived, felt experience, a stance that helped establish the psychology of religion as a field.
