David McCullough’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Truman (1992) chronicles the life of Harry S. Truman, the Missouri farm boy and haberdasher who became the thirty-third president of the United States. McCullough, already known for his narrative histories of the Brooklyn Bridge and Theodore Roosevelt, spent roughly a decade researching Truman, drawing heavily on the personal letters Truman wrote to his wife Bess and on interviews with surviving contemporaries.
