Understanding by Design

Understanding by Design, first published in 1998 by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, introduced a planning framework now widely known as backward design. Rather than beginning with activities or textbook coverage, the authors argue that curriculum should start from the end: identify the desired results, determine acceptable evidence of learning, then plan instruction. This three-stage process anchors the book's central claim that teaching for understanding differs from teaching for coverage. Wiggins and McTighe define understanding through six facets: explanation, interpretation, application, perspective, empathy, and self-knowledge. A student who can only recite a definition has not necessarily understood; genuine understanding shows in the ability to transfer ideas to new, unfamiliar situations. The book distinguishes between "big ideas" and enduring understandings—core concepts worth retaining beyond the test—and urges educators to frame essential questions that provoke inquiry rather than single correct answers. The authors also critique common planning habits, such as the "twin sins" of activity-oriented design, where lessons are engaging but aimless, and coverage-oriented design, where content is marched through without ensuring meaning. Their rubric-based approach asks teachers to check alignment among goals, assessments, and learning activities, and to design performance tasks that require students to apply knowledge in realistic contexts. The text is not a scripted curriculum but a conceptual template, illustrated with design templates, unit examples, and vignettes across grade levels and subjects. Its emphasis on assessment before instruction influenced standards-based reforms, curriculum mapping, and professional development in the United States and abroad. A companion volume, Understanding by Design Handbook, and later editions expanded the framework with more tools and classroom cases.
